FAST FIXES FOR HIGH SPEED INTERNET

1. Adjust router.

Very few people connect their computers directly to their internet modem. If you have multiple computers in the house or connect wirelessly, there is another device between the modem and your computer – the router. Depending on the brand and model of the router, there may be adjustments that can be made to how the router is operating that can speed up your Internet connection. You may need to find the owner’s manual for the router and read about all of the settings available.

2. Limit access to the router.

The more computers that connect to your router at the same time, the slower the Internet speed will be. In many cases, you may not even realize that people outside of your household are connecting to your wireless Internet service. This is only one reason why it is necessary to secure your wireless service. Keeping the connection secure and password-protected will ensure that only your computers are connecting to your service.

3. Turn off unused and unnecessary applications.

Running too many applications on your computer can eat up your Internet bandwidth. Many applications, if they are up and running make connections to the Internet. If you are not using a specific application, be sure it is closed down, so the applications you are using can take advantage of your maximum bandwidth.

4. Call your Internet provider.

In some cases, there is nothing you can do from your home about slow Internet speeds, but your Internet provider may be able to test their end of the service, making adjustments that provide you with faster internet. If you are already getting the maximum speed you are paying for, you may be able to sign up for faster service.

5. Check for other Internet providers.

Chances are that your high speed internet provider is not the only one available in your area. Check out the competition and see if they can provide you with faster internet service.
